10. Every Teardrop is a waterfall

I know Mylo Xyloto is a controversial album of Coldplay. Many people are critical about this experimental album, thinking it no longer a Coldplay style. But believe it or not, this is the song that actually turns me into a Coldplay fan. The song's melody is motivational. The lyrics can make you feel encouraged and supported when you are down. As the song says, "So you can hurt, hurt me bad, but I'll still raise the flag", it makes you believe in hope, and believe that no teardrop will go in vain.

9. In My Place

Released: August 5, 2002, • UK Chart peak: No.2
In my place is the second track and the first single of A Rush of Blood to the Head. It is a simple but great ballad. The drumming and guitar parts, in the beginning, are memorable. Then you hear Chris Martin's vocals, singing a song about a man waiting for a woman. Each line of the song makes you feel the agony of the man. Haunt him, and us.

8. Viva La Vida

Released: May 25, 2008 • UK Chart peak: No.1
The title of the song Viva La Vida means "Long Live Life", which is taken from a painting by a legendary Mexican artist, Frida Kahlo. The song is Coldplay's first No.1 single, and the publication of the album Viva La Vida could be regarded as a peak of Coldplay's music career. I think it is from this album that reveals Coldplay as a band that is bold for change.

7. Paradise

Released: September 12, 2011 • UK Chart peak: No.1
The song Paradise is Coldplay's second No.1 single after "Viva la Vida" in 2008. It was the best-selling rock song of 2011 in the United Kingdom, with 410,000 copies in total. The music video of the song can also be deemed as one of the best videos in the 2000s. Billboard gave a positive review, calling the track as "another slice of hug-warm ecstasy", and gave praise to the "boiling strings, rattling synthesizers, and bass-heavy-beats", saying "it shows they know how to bring a few new tricks to the table".

6. Amsterdam

Amsterdam is the last track from the album A Rush of Blood to the Head. It is a song with deep emotion. After watching this video, I am pretty sure that Chris Martin's piano and his vocals will make you feel connected to them.

5. Speed of Sound

Released: April 18, 2005 • UK Chart peak: No.2
Speed of Sound is from Coldplay's 3rd studio album X&Y. It won a Brit Award in the category for Best British Single in 2006. In my opinion, the song is a lyrical masterpiece, although the lyrics are obscure, or philosophic, like "Some things you have to believe/others are puzzles puzzling me," and "How long am I gonna stand/with my head stuck under the sand." After all, it is a really cool song that can bring you belief and assurance.

4. Yellow

Released: June 26, 2000 • Chart peak: No.4
This is definitely a classic song from their 2000 debut, Parachutes. When you hear "Look at the stars, look how they shine for you", you are bound to think of Coldplay. Many people even compared this sweeping ballad to Radiohead's "Fake Plastic Trees". And Coldplay has become a world-known British Rock Band since then.

3. The Scientist

Released: November 4, 2002 • Chart peak: No.10
The song, The Scientist, is built around a piano ballad, telling the story about a man's desire to love and an apology. It received many praises by critics. A lot of people may think that the lyrics just speak out their mind. And many versions of this song are touching. So here is a live version (Live 2012) of this song.

2. Charlie Brown

Released: January 23, 2012 • Chart peak: No.22
You must be confused about why this song can be my No.2 personal favorite. It is an inspiring song, also full of imagination. The lyrics of the song is elaborated. Here I quote: "When they smash my heart into smithereens, I'll be a bright red rose combusting the concrete." You can feel their passion in the song. Besides, the ending part of the song is healing, and it brings you peace.

Released: September 5, 2005 • Chart peak: No.4
No doubt that this song has to be introduced to everyone. When hearing "... And the tears come streaming down your face, when you lose something you can't replace when you love someone but it goes to waste...", I bet even the most unemotional person could be reduced to tears by this saddening, yet beautiful song.
