Emily Grant
Emily Grant Love Cats, Love Views, Love Words

It is a frequent phenomenon that some English words may have a similar appearance, with the same meaning, but different spellings. There words are likely coming from the same root, but due to the different spelling and pronunciation custom of different English speaking countries, such as American English and British English, the appearance of the words would be different. For example, the words Disc and Disk are a pair that are evolved from the same root but finally go into different spellings. Also, the objects they stand for are different. In this post, we would talk about them.

Disk and Disc

Part 1. Same Roots But Different Spelling

Originally, the word Disk firstly became a member of English language family in the middle of the 17th century. People used it to stand for the record, which was used to save some media content like video and audio recordings, whose shape was like a flat plate. Then the technicians of BBC tried to make Disc be different from Disk, so they separated these two words individually. Afterwards, Disk were referred to those in-house transcription records, while Disc stood for the commercial gramophone records.

Disk vs Disc

Late in 20th century, the differences in spelling and pronunciation between American and British English gradually became different. In United States, the "k" spelling were used more often. By comparison, the "c" is more prevail in the United Kingdom. So after the first hard disk storage device was invented in the United State, they used Disk to refer those devices. So today, Disk are more frequently used for those magnetic storage devices.

Part 2. Different Examples in UK and US

As you can see from their history, the words, Disc and Disk have great similarity actually. They have similar spelling - both two words are originated from the same root Latin word, which is "discus". Also, they both refer to a device, which is a CD in the shape of a circle, flat plate.

But they do have difference, here I would list you some examples.

Disk is more often used in American English and also stands for the hard disks.

2. "It points out that full disk encryption (FDE) doesn't protect you against malicious websites and viruses, nor does it stop internet surveillance." —The Guardian

Disc and Disk

By contrast, British English prefers to use Disc. In addition, it is more suitable to use Disc to describe those carriers with carry sound, a part of the agricultural equipment, or a thing that is in the shape of a disc and related to eye and ophthalmology.

1. "In scenes not unlike the Independence Day franchise about alien invasions of Earth, videos have apparently shown a gigantic disc-shaped cloud over the skies in Cartagena, Colombia, South America." —The Daily Express
2. "Discs are among the most significant advances. Heavier implements moving at higher speeds required better discs that kept their edge longer." —The Western Producer

Good afternoon. I buy Marijuana Clones on this site every year. I really love growing this plant. I am glad that new varieties of marijuana are added to the site every year. In general, the plants give a good harvest and do not get sick.
