It is adapted from the modern version of Giacomo Puccini's musical Madama Butterfly, which tells the tragic story of an Asian woman abandoned by her white lover.

But in Miss Saigon, the story background is set in the Saigon of 1970. And the American military and Japanese geisha in Madama Butterfly are replaced by American soldiers and Vietnamese women.

The musical is inspired by a photo in a magazine. In the picture, at the gate of an airport in Sai Kung, a Vietnamese mother is sending her children to the United States, where her child's American father could provide the child with a better living environment.

Claude-Michel Schönberg thought what the mother does was "the greatest sacrifice", which became the central theme of Miss Saigon musical later.

In the Vietnam War, the heroine Kim - a Vietnamese dance hostess and the hero Chris - an American soldier fall in love with each other. However, due to troop withdrawal, Chris had to return to America.

Later, Kim gave birth to Chris's children. She hoped that one day Chris would come back and pick her up to the United States. But Chris, who had married in the United States, was impossible to be with Kim again. So Kim eventually chose to commit suicide.

1) The acting was great, the singing was great and of course, the story, based on the Opera Madame Butterfly, is a solid drama. It was filmed pretty up close, there were not so many wide shots, which made you get deeply involved in the drama even more than in the theater. (From IMDb)

2) The cast I think is better than the original as the dialects feel more real, the acting is great and most importantly the Engineer is not Jonathan Pryce but a guy who actually fits the part. The detail in the sets and costuming is incredible and the singing is top-notch. A+. (From Amazon)
